Description: The Lower Missouri is defined as the valley and tributaries of the Missouri River from its mouth at the Mississippi River to the mouth of the Niobrara River in northwest Nebraska. The United States first entered this region during the American Revolution and began to occupy the area shortly after the Louisiana Purchase. This presentation will discuss the interactions between the United States and the American Indians in the Lower Missouri from the Revolution through the War of 1812; a brief era that dramatically changed the social, economic and political landscape of the Lower Missouri region.
