Missouri couple sentenced in case of man locked in bedroom

PINEVILLE (AP) — A husband and wife from southwestern Missouri have been ordered to pay $5,000 in restitution for cashing government checks intended for an elderly man who was found padlocked in a bedroom in their home.
The Joplin Globe reports that 47-year-old Kevin Miller and 50-year-old Janice Miller of Goodman pleaded guilty Tuesday to financial exploitation of an elderly person. The plea deal dismissed kidnapping and armed criminal action charges. The couple received a suspended sentence.
Fashion designer Kate Spade to be buried in Kansas City

KANSAS CITY (AP) — Fashion designer Kate Spade will be buried Thursday in Kansas City, where she was born.
Services for Spade are planned for 3 p.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Redemptorist Church. Her father, Frank Brosnahan, says it's the same church where Spade's grandparents wed.
Black bear sightings in Missouri 'not entirely rare'

COLUMBIA – The black bear population in Missouri is growing, and with the growth comes an increased chance for a bear encounter.
Recent bear sightings were reported near St. Louis and black bears are expanding through the state as their population continues to increase.
MU awarded $1 million grant for science education, part of inclusive initiative

COLUMBIA - MU received a one million dollar grant as part of an inclusive initiative from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
The initiative and funding are for science students and faculty, a press release from MU said.

NEW YORK - All Mizzou fan's eyes are on the NBA draft, which begins Thursday night, and who will pick Michael Porter Jr.
With Porter Jr. being one of the top two forwards in the draft, his father wrote him a letter ahead of selection.
Martian dust storm has become 'planet-encircling,' NASA says

(CNN) -- Last week, a giant dust storm on Mars took up about a quarter of the Red Planet. Now, it's officially "planet-encircling" global dust event, according to NASA.
The solar-powered Opportunity rover stopped communicating with NASA engineers after June 10 because it didn't have enough energy to function, and it put itself to sleep. The rover is maintaining radio silence because the dust has turned day to night on Mars.

COLUMBIA - After an armed robbery at Deco to Retro and Vintage Clothing on the Business Loop June 15, Columbia Police have a suspect.
CPD released four surveillance photos of the suspect on its Facebook page Wednesday afternoon.
14 pounds of pot, guns, cash seized in Cole County

COLE COUNTY - The Cole County Sheriff's Department and the MUSTANG Drug Task Force seized 14 pounds of marijuana, four guns, $14,000 in cash, a ballistic vest and other drug paraphernalia from a home Tuesday afternoon.
Two narcotic search warrants were served in the 2300 block of Schott Road in Cole County.
Jefferson City parks could be under new control if recommendation goes through

JEFFERSON CITY - The Jefferson City Parks and Recreation Department could see some major changes in authority if a recommendation goes through next week.
The Jefferson City Charter Review Advisory Committee recommended three potential changes in the city's charter to the Parks and Recreation commission.
Lawyer: Texts show Greitens' staffers' use of secretive app

JEFFERSON CITY (AP) — An attorney suing former Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens and his staffers says recently uncovered texts show two former employees used a message-deleting app to communicate about state policy.
Screenshots show former deputy legislative directors Brad Green and Jeff Earl texted about talking points on a prescription drug monitoring policy, The Kansas City Star reported.
