BOONE COUNTY - Authorities arrested a convicted felon on weapon and drug charges early Friday morning after a traffic stop.

A Boone County Sheriff's deputy was speaking to a driver about a traffic violation when he "developed reason to believe" a controlled substance was in the man's car, according to a press release.

The sheriff's department said the deputy searched the car and found marijuana and a handgun. The department said the marijuana was packaged in a way indicative of drug sales.

The driver, Oscar Ashford, of Columbia, is a convicted felon and, therefore, banned from having a firearm. Missouri's online case system shows two cases with Ashford. In one, he pleaded guilty to possession of up to 35 grams of marijuana in 2010. The other case listed does not show what he was charged with.

Ashford faces charges of distribution of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful use of a weapon while in possession of a controlled substance. His bond amounts total $12,500.
