Mizzou OC Heupel takes job at Central FloridaPosted on 5 December 2017 at 12:59pm
COLUMBIA - The University of Central Florida announced Tuesday morning that Missouri offensive coordinator Josh Heupel would be the school's new head football coach.
Heupel was in his second year in charge of the Mizzou offense. He also served as the team's quarterbacks coach.
Heupel replaces Scott Frost at UCF. Frost recently accepted the head coaching position at his alma mater Nebraska. Frost led to Knights to an 12-0, undefeated season in 2017. They will face off with Auburn in the Peach Bowl on January 1st.
"I'm extremely excited about the opportunity to represent UCF. What makes this opportunity so unique is the vision of the leadership from President John Hitt, Provost Dale Whitaker and Director of Athletics Danny White. Their vision for this becoming one of the premier programs in the country makes this an exciting opportunity. That vision, the amazing campus, along with the recruiting base not only allows you to have immediate success but sustained success. I'm very excited to get a staff together and get to work with our wonderful student-athletes," Heupel said in a press release from UCF.
In just two years, Heupel turned the Missouri offense into one of the best units in the nation.
In 2015, the Missouri offense was one of the worst in the country, averaging just 280 yards per game and 13.6 points per game, second worst in all of the FBS.
This season, led by junior QB Drew Lock, the Missouri offense was 7th in the nation averaging 512 yards per game and 10th in the nation averaging 39.3 points per game.
The Tigers now will look for a new offensive coordinator as the intrigue around Lock's decision whether to stay at Mizzou or enter the NFL Draft now grow.
Heupel will officially be introduced as UCF's head coach at a press conference this afternoon at 2pm eastern/ 1pm central.
