13-Year-Old to Keep Found Money
CAMDENTON - Sheriff Dwight Franklin awarded Mickenzie Garrett of Macks Creek $1,400 Thursday, money the boy found last fall and turned in to authorities. Garrett found the money inside a purse by a parking lot while running the mile at school. Garrett told his dad about the money, who turned the money in to the Camden County Sheriff''s Office.
Since no one claimed the money for six months, Franklin released the money to Garrett, as well as giving him a citizen's award. Franklin said it is heartening to know a 13-year-old boy would do the right thing by turning the money in instead of pocketing it.
Garrett's parents said they are proud of their son and the money is going straight into a savings account for his education. Garrett said he is going to go home and play his new Star Wars video game tonight to celebrate.
