$2.7 Million Dollar Morgue Unveiled in Springfield
SPRINGFIELD (AP) - It might seem morbid but Greene County authorities are celebrating the opening of a new morgue.
The $2.7 million morgue in Springfield was unveiled on Thursday. Authorities say the county will no longer have to send the bodies to Columbia for autopsies by a medical examiner, which slowed crime investigations and inconvenienced families of the deceased.
Chris Coulter, director of resource management for Greene County, said the county planned to lease the facility to the University of Missouri, which will have a medical examiner working on site.
The Springfield News-Leader reports the project was financed by a $23 million bond issue in 2010. The bonds also were used for construction of a Public Safety Center.
