A Hold on the Death Penalty
JEFFERSON CITY (AP) - A death penalty proponent is the unlikely sponsor of a bill that would put Missouri executions on hold until 2011 while a commission reviews the death penalty law. Republican House member Bill Deeken of Jefferson City says he's not against the death penalty but wants to be sure that anyone sentenced to die is the right person. Deeken said he thinks that the use of DNA evidence shows that the death penalty is not always imposed fairly. He said DNA necessitates a state review of the practice. Deeken said the Missouri Catholic Conference asked him to propose the legislation, even though he backs the death penalty in some cases. House Corrections Committee chairman Van Kelly of Norwood calls a review panel "another layer of bureaucracy," and says the death penalty process takes too long already.
