COLUMBIA - The first-ever "Patchwork Project" band competition takes stage Friday at Roxys where 25 of Columbia's finest musicians were chosen and randomly placed into five bands.
The project is the brainchild of David Kemper, founder of the "Columbia Missouri Music Scene" Facebook page. Kemper reached Columbia musicians via Craig's List and the Facebook page, encouraging them to apply for the event. After receiving 70 applications, the 5 most capable guitarists, bassists, vocalist, drummers and auxiliary instrumentalists' names were tossed into a hat and randomly assigned to five new bands.
Each group had about two months to get their bands ready for the final competition on Friday. The participants will be judged by the audience and the winner walks away with a $500 cash prize. Each band was assigned one Beatles cover to include in their set and will be required to produce 30 minutes of original materials.
The doors open at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, at Roxy's, located at 1025A E. Broadway. There will be a $5 cover charge, $7 for minors. The music will begin at 9:30 p.m. and end around 1 a.m.
