Accidental Shooting at Party
People living across the street from this house at 5001 Kirk Hill Road got a rude awakening.
"We didnt know exactly what was going on, we just walked outside the house and saw police everywhere and thought it was kind of weird," said neighbor Daniel Wichern.
Police were called after a gunshot was reported. They say the shooter was 19-year old Corey Frye who was attending a party at the house.
Witnesses there say he found a gun and started playing with it.
Samantha Ingebritson, a witness said, "He took the clip out so he thought there was no bullets in it, you know, he was just seeing how it worked and he ended up, not even aiming, just pulling the trigger and ended up accidentally shooting his brother."
Ingebritson said she was worried for both men.
"I thought I was losing one of my friends and then his brother is also one of my friends and what was going to happen to him, that his brother and he was so upset and distraught because that's his family, they are as close as brothers can be," explains Ingebritson.
Police aren't identifying the victim at this time, and even though he may not press charges, Frye could still face punishment.
"They may consider it an accident but under state statute it is what we believe to be a criminal offense and that's why Mr. Frye was taken into custody, said Sergeant Ken Hammond of the Columbia Police Department.
The victim was shot in the chest and suffered a punctured lung but is expected to recover
Police are still investigating who owns the gun and when they find out, charges will be filed because the serial number was intentionally defaced.
