Airman dies from gunshot wound, suspect arrested
COLUMBIA - A Senior Airman from Whiteman Air Force Base has died from a gunshot wound that he suffered Saturday.
According to a press release from Whiteman, 22-year-old Senior Airman John J. Bottom died at a Kansas City hospital on Sunday.
The shooting occurred at an off-base residence in Warrensburg.
"We have lost a valued member of Team Whiteman," Brig. Gen. Glen VanHerck, commander of the 509th Bomb Wing commander said in the news release.
The Associated Press reported Sunday that a suspect was arrested in the shooting.
A press release from the Johnson County Sheriff's Office says the suspect was a "friend and acquaintance of the victim."
Whiteman Air Force Base officials are assisting the Johnson County Sheriff's Office, who is leading the investigation.
