COLUMBIA - Former City Council member Almeta Crayton will hold a meeting Thursday night at Douglass Park to discuss recent events in the city's first ward. The area saw a number of shootings over the past few months, and there's been discussion lately of tearing down the nearby bridge over Providence road.
Crayton said that unemployment is largely to blame for the incidents in the park and the surrounding area and that zoning difficulties are keeping businesses away. "Our neighborhood is zoned so that you can't say, 'let me take a building or put up a building and open up a store." Crayton added that she thinks there's been a lot of talk about improving the area, but not enough direct action.
The meeting on Thursday starts at 6 p.m. at the Douglass Park Pavilion and is open to anyone.
