JEFFERSON CITY - America Recycles Day starts Thursday, and it's all about a competition to turn your trash into cash.
St. Peter Interparish School in Jefferson City is participating in the third annual Great American Can Roundup School Challenges. The challenge is to see what school can collect the most aluminum cans from Thursday until Earth Day, which is April 22.
The Can Manufacturers Institute is awarding $1,000 to the school in each state recycling the most aluminum cans per student. It is also giving an additional $5,000 to the school that recycles the most cans nationwide.
During the second annual event, schools recycled more than 4.5 million cans, raising more than $100,000. The deadline to register is December 15.
