Attorney's office takes unique stand against sexual violence
MEXICO - There was a lot of red lipstick seen at the Audrain County Prosecuting Attorney's Office on Friday, all to bring attention to a very important cause.
Members of the office introduced the "Red My Lips" campaign to raise awareness about problems surrounding sexual violence.
Prosecuting Attorney Jacob Shellabarger was just one of the many people in the office that put on red lipstick in an effort to start up conversation about sexual violence.
Shellabarger said he has seen an increase in the number of domestic assault and sexual violence cases in the area.
"Individuals are less willing to put up with it," Shellabarger said.
Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Ashley Turner agrees.
"There has been several more cases that have ended up on my desk that are adult sexually violent cases," Turner said.
Turner urged the community to start looking at sexual violence and domestic assault in a different way.
"Stop the victim-blaming and look at the attacker and the choices of the attacker," Turner said.
Shellabarger encourages any people involved with domestic assault or sexual violence to take advantage of the resources that are offered, including the Victim Services unit associated with the attorney's office.
