COLUMBIA - The new Battle Elementary is asking for clothes donations so it is stocked when it opens in the fall.

Bright Futures Columbia is helping collect the clothes so there is a supply in the office in case students need to change during the school day.

Columbia Public Schools Community Relations Director Michelle Baumstark said the school PTA usually helps collect clothing, but since Battle hasn't opened yet, there is not an established PTA.

"The clothes closet really helps students who maybe while they're at school their clothing may be soiled or torn or something may happen and they might need a change of clothing," she said.

Bright Futures said the most-needed items are underwear, socks, t-shirts, shorts and sweatpants for boys and girls in kindergarten through fifth grade.

"It really is more at the elementary level," Baumstark said. "We don't have as many issues with needing changes of clothing as students get older, but really at the elementary level they need to have supplies because we have little ones that maybe have differing needs than maybe what our high school students would need."

Items can be new or gently used (except underwear). They can be dropped off at the CPS administration building at 1818 W. Worley Street.

Bright Futures is also accepting cash donations to keep the Battle Elementary clothes closet supplied.

Battle is set to open in the fall with about 400 students. It is located just north of Battle High School.
