Big Spring Flowing Again
But, Fayette residents remember their past by revisiting the just-restored Big Spring. It looks clean, sounds fresh and tastes great. Howard County Clerk Mark Hill helped renovate the Missouri landmark.
"Whenever you can have a complete victory in life, that's nice," he said. "And the great thing about the spring is that it is completely done."
Many area residents at the reopening shared spring stories from decades ago.
"Coming over here and using the tin cup that was sitting on the back and getting a drink after we came over Memorial Day," recalled Lee Hutchins.
Two of the spring's four walls had collapsed, but workers tried to retain as much of the original structure as possible.
"It just tasted like fresh water, and it's so clear," said Mary Lou Perkins of Columbia. "It just tasted good. Everybody had to get a drink at the spring."
Howard County tested Big Spring's water, and said visitors drink at their own risk.
