Birkhead Pleads in Death of Homeless Man
COLUMBIA - A 50-year-old homeless man has pleaded guilty in the killing of another man at a homeless camp in Columbia last October.
Travis Birkhead faces 18 years in prison in exchange for his pleas Monday to charges of voluntary manslaughter and armed criminal action.
Birkhead and 58-year-old Ricky Gaddy were charged in the fatal beating and stabbing of Jerry Schneider near a former restaurant in the mid-Missouri city. Authorities said the 55-year-old victim was hit in the face with a large piece of concrete and stopped breathing. He was then stabbed.
The Columbia Daily Tribune reports Gaddy pleaded guilty June 6 to second-degree murder and armed criminal action. He was sentenced to life in prison on the murder charge, with a 20-year sentence for armed criminal action to run concurrently.
