Black Team Gets First Win of Mizzou Fall World Series
COLUMBIA - The Black Team defeated the Gold Team, 2-1, in game three of the Mizzou baseball Fall World Series on Saturday evening at Taylor Stadium. The win for the Black Team is its first of the Fall World Series as the Gold Team now holds a 2-1 lead in the series heading into game four, which will be played Sunday at 1 p.m.
Freshman Nick Moore drove in the game-winning run in the top of the sixth inning. With two outs and runners on first and second, Moore doubled to right field to drive in Scott Sommerfeld from second base, which turned out to be the game-winning run for the Black Team. The Black Team would have added another run, but Dane Opel was thrown out at the plate on Moore's double.
The Black and Gold Teams combined for just 10 hits in the game, seven for the Black Team and just three for the Gold Team, which had won the first two games of the series. Freshman Brandon Platts started on the hill for the Black Team and threw three innings of no-hit baseball. He got a no-decision as he was relieved in the fourth inning by Brett Thomas, after the Black Team gained a lead in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Jake Ivory.
With a lead, Thomas came on and pitched a scoreless fourth before allowing a Gold run in the bottom of the fifth. Senior Conner Mach hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score CJ Jarvis, evening the game at 1-1. The game stayed knotted at 1-1 until Moore's hit in the top of the sixth and then Ryan Yuengel closed out the game with a save in the bottom of the seventh.
The Gold Team had a chance to take a commanding 3-0 lead in the series, but it squandered a great start from Tiger ace Eric Anderson, who threw 3.0 innings, giving up just three hits with two strikeouts and a walk. Kyle Barbeck was tagged with the loss as he threw 4.0 innings, allowing four hits and two earned runs while striking out three.
