Blue Tigers Fall at Missouri S&T
ROLLA, MO -- Chris Pfau was perfect from the plate, collecting four hits and an RBI in four at-bats, but it was not enough as the Lincoln baseball team fell at Missouri S&T, 7-1, in the Blue Tigers' final non-conference game of the season. The Blue Tigers were outhit, 13-6, in the loss as the Miners took an early 6-0 lead and sustained it throughout the contest.
After giving up two runs in the opening frame and four more in the second, all on seven hits and an LU error, the Blue Tigers finally got on the board in the top of the third. Two errors by Missouri S&T (27-11) helped Lincoln (5-35) avoid the shutout, as back-to-back fielding miscues allowed Cody Huff and Martin Gulley to get on base. A double play in the next at-bat retired Huff, but Andrew St. Pierre kept the inning alive with a base hit that advanced Gulley to second. Pfau then nailed his second hit of the afternoon, lining a double into right centerfield to score Gulley.
The only other Lincoln player to collect a hit in the contest was Kyle Henke, who led off with a single in the top of the ninth. He later stole second, but another steal attempt was thwarted, as Henke was caught out at third base. A pair of strikeouts ended the game for Lincoln.
Kyle Williams led Lincoln with seven putouts while Huff and Ryan Rohmiller each had three. Huff and St. Pierre led LU with two assists apiece. Gatlin Wiggans opened the game on the mound, tossing a strikeout but eventually giving way to Joe Jungmeyer, who fanned two opposing batters. Darren Lasley tallied a strikeout himself as the second reliever while Caleb Kemna closed the game on the mound.
The Blue Tigers will return to conference play this weekend, hosting Missouri Southern for their final home series of the year. Lincoln will begin the series on Friday, welcoming the Lions for a 3:00 p.m. CDT contest. The two teams are then scheduled to play a doubleheader on Saturday and another single contest on Sunday.
