Blunt Focuses on Health and Children
"I stand before you pleased to report that because of our work together the days of economic uncertainty are in the past," said Blunt.
Governor Blunt took a family approach in his speech. He connected families and their values to every issue he spoke about.
Blunt spoke about health care and education.
He got applause when he spoke about quality and affordable health care for Missouri families, including promoting HealthNet. He proposed the program to replace the state's old Medicaid program.
Blunt talked about increasing after-school programs to keep children safe in the afternoon when they are most likely unsupervised.
"For too long, the hours between 3 and 6 have been the most dangerous for our children. That is one reason I have been encouraging the expansion of after school programs. These programs provide a safe haven for children and opportunities for students to participate in math and science enrichment activities that the regular school day may not allow. To support these programs my budget includes $1 million to expand quality after school programs in math and science, as well as physical activity in health," said Blunt.
Blunt also said, "More than 50,000 jobs have been created and Missourians are enjoying greater prosperity. Fellow Missourians, the state of our state is strong, prosperous, and vibrant. We cannot and should not rest on these important accomplishments. We must do more!"
"We enacted legislation to prevent protests at the funeral services of fallen soldiers. Because of this law, and the vigorous enforcement by our police, sheriffs and Highway Patrol, the families of our men and women in uniform are able to honor our military heroes," Blunt continued.
There was a bi-partisan moment when Governor Blunt introduced Mitchell Hults. He's the Franklin County teenager who was able to help police in the search for Ben Ownby, who went missing earlier this month. Mitchell got a rousing cheer from all the lawmakers.
