Board to Decide on Transfer Policy

COLUMBIA - Columbia Public School's transfer policy may be up for debate in a few months because of new Battle High School opening up in 2013.

The board will soon have to decide whether or not to tighten up the transfer policy in the school district. Many in the community feel like it's too easy for kids to transfer from one school to the other.

"I don't think it's incredibly difficult to transfer," Assistant Superintendent Wanda Brown said. "People have to have a good reason for that. I think what people would be surprised is that the number of transfers between high schools is not as much as you would think."

Hickman actually had more transfers into the school in the 2007-2008 school year than Rock Bridge did. In 2008-2009, 52 kids transferred to Rock Bridge while just five transferred to Hickman. In 2009-2010, the number of Rock Bridge transfers more than doubled the number of Hickman's.

"I knew a lot of kids that were close by that went to Rock Bridge even though that they were in the Hickman district, not for any particular reason." Hickman graduate Maegen Hahn said.

The CPS public forums brought up ideas as to how to possibly change the transfer policy. Whether or not the board decides to change the policy is in question. As it stands right now, students are supposed to have a "legitimate reason" to transfer from one school to the other.
