COLLEGE STATION, TX -- Junior David Bonuchi claimed the 1-meter diving title to highlight competition at day one of the 2013 Southeastern Conference Swimming and Diving Championships on Tuesday in College Station, Texas. The Tigers sit in fifth place with 146 points after day one.

Bonuchi notched a score of 401.50 in the finals to take Mizzou's first-ever SEC swimming and diving championship. The junior ended up 12 points ahead of the second-place finisher and almost 30 points ahead of third-place. The title marks Bonuchi's second-ever conference championship, as he claimed the 3-meter title at last year's Big 12 Championships.

"Winning felt amazing," Bonuchi said. "It felt like all our hard work paid off, we've been training all year. I had my team supporting me. It was just an awesome experience."

Bonuchi posted a 366.95 in the prelims to enter the finals session as the top qualifier. Freshman Clark Thomas just missed making finals as he finished ninth with a score of 312.25, less than two points away from eighth place. Freshman Michael Barry placed 26th (235.55), while freshman Cameron Cowgill was 30th (217.20).

In the first swimming event of the Championships, the Tigers placed fifth in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:25.94 to set a new school record. The team of sophomore Sam Tierney, junior Mark Conroy, junior Logan Mosley and freshman Max Grodecki also bettered the team's NCAA `A' qualifying time.

Mizzou set another program record in the 800 free relay. The team of sophomores Eegan Groome, Alex Glogoza, Connor Nolan and Andrew Phillips notched an NCAA `B' time of 6:27.39 to finish in eighth place.

The SEC Championships resume Wednesday, Feb. 20 with preliminary action at 10 a.m. and the finals session at 6 p.m.
