COLUMBIA - Boone Co. Fire responded to a basement fire in Columbia early Sunday night.
Officials arrived on the scene in the 6000 block of St. Charles Road and Lake of the Woods in Columbia just after 7 p.m. The scene was just across the street from Boone Co. Fire House No. 1. Light smoke was seen on arrival. After firefighters canvased the area around the house, heavy smoke was seen in the basement.
"What we found inside the basement as crews made an interior attack. [They] went down the stairs and found the fire inside the lower level bathroom," said Gale Blomenkamp, Boone Co. Officials managed to save the family's small dog after entering the house. Everyone inside the house managed to get out of the house safely with no injuries. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
