Boone County Volunteer Firefighter Honored
Berlemann, a Coast Guard flight mechanic, received the Air Medal for helping save two fishermen off the Florida coast as the hurricane moved toward New Orleans.
"It was unbelivable," recalled Coast Guard Lt. Greg Parsons. "He was the oak that kept us all flying."
Now, Berlemann's fellow Boone County volunteer firefighters appreciate his bravery.
"People like Dan come to us from all walks of life," said Chief Steve Paulsell of the Boone County Fire Protection District, "and he brings some talents and some life experiences such as this that certainly makes us better and we're very proud to have him join our ranks."
The Coast Guard flew from Florida to Columbia to give the medal to Berlemann.
