Boone Hospital Lease Up for Discussion
"We're a not-for-profit organization, and so all of the earnings that we generate are retained for community benefit. They are not distributed to owners or shareholders or investors," said BJC President Steven Lipstein. "And so we're very committed to the people of Boone County and to the operation of this hospital."
Trustee Fred Parry responded, "It's time to take a look at the value of the services they provide and, basically see if we can't reinvest that money right back into the hospital and back into the community's healthcare needs."
Boone Hospital signed a lease agreement with C.H. Allied in 1988. Both sides amended the agreement 13 years later and extended it to the end of this year. That agreement lets trustees terminate the agreement early, if they decide to do so by the end of December.
Early termination would take effect in 2008, while the initial lease agreement expires in 2015.
"We sent out RFPs to other companies and hospitals for proposals to lease or manage Boone Hospital. We will be meeting with Mr. Lipstein in a couple of weeks, so we do have a plan," said trustee Barbara Weaver.
That plan and the board's final decision could change who runs the local landmark hospital.
