Break-ins Sweep Boonville

The crooks target cars only, strike in the middle of the night, and unfortunately have been very successful. Boonville Police have a rough idea of who is behind this, but still do not have any suspects.

Reports of suspicious activity from residents have led to their belief that a couple of people are behind the crimes. They want locals to keep an eye out for anything unusual, which shouldn't be hard because it is definitely the talk of the town.

Tim Parish has been hit by the Boonville car thieves and is not taking it sitting down.

"The point is it's yours, it's not theirs, and they're taking from people and it needs to come to a stop quickly," said Parish.

His Chrysler Sebring had its roof slashed Monday. Parish, however, was not the only one who had stuff taken.

"Twenty-four in about two weeks that's pretty serious," said Don Smith of the Boonville Police Department.

That's right. Twenty-four cars broken into in two weeks and even that could be a conservative estimate.

"I do know that there's several people that I even talked to today who said their cars have been tampered with, but they weren't going to call it in because they didn't think they had really lost that much," said Parish.

The crooks are stealing wallets, CD's, radios, even radar detectors.

"And I look over in my passenger seat and stuff from my glove box was in my passenger seat and then I looked around some more and saw the console open and thought somebody's been in my car!" said Jessica Inscore, another car burglary victim.

While most of the thefts have sought out unlocked cars, Parish's car was cut, the thieves got in through the seam, to open up the door from the inside. Police still don't have any suspects, so what is their tactic?

"The public's helping out a lot, they're watching they're calling, people are seeing some things and that's what it's gonna take. The public working with us," said Smith.

Parish thinks some people are holding back, worried about being snitches.

"If they really care about the people, they'd be better to give them up now before they get into bigger and worse things," said Parish.

From what I saw, 24 does seem to be an under-estimate. The police have filed reports for 24 people, but many people I talked in Boonville today, just on the street, said they had been victims of auto break-ins in the last two weeks. Many of them had CD's stolen or a couple of dollars and had not bothered to report it.
