COLUMBIA - A pole near Nifong and Bearfield roads broke Thursday morning and left about 1,400 residents in the southern portion of Columbia without power, though a Water and Light official said the department restored the majority of homes within 10 minutes.
Substation supervisor Fred Eaton said lightning may have been the reason the pole broke around 9:50 a.m. Eaton said by 10 a.m., all but about 435 homes had power back on.
Eaton said the department restored power to all homes by 11:30 a.m.
