JEFFERSON CITY - Corban and Wyatt Bonnett woke before the sun rose Monday. Their 1,200-pound steers Buzz and Scuzz did too.

The Bonnett brothers plan to show their steers at the Cole County Fair in Jefferson City this week. The fair begins Monday night at 5 p.m. and runs through Saturday. The brothers have been working all year to prepare for the weigh in, show and auction of their steers.

"It takes quite a bit of work and dedication," 13-year-old Corban Bonnett said. Despite the demands it takes to raise the steer, Corban said he enjoys his time spent with Buzz.

"They're kind of like a human buddy. You just get to know them. It's kind of like a friend."

The Bonnett's arrived at the Jefferson City Jaycees Fairground with their mother early Monday morning. LeAnne Bonnett said she likes to beat the rush and let the steers get settled before a long day of grooming, weighing and showing.

"During the day it won't be too bad," Corban said, "Then the night it'll get pretty crazy because we have to fit our steers, then we'll have to show them and then we'll go in for the extra if we win then we'll go into the grand drive."

Fitting a steer is a lengthy process.

"We make ‘em pretty," Corban said. "We'll put them through adhesive to make their hair stand up."

He said they clip any uneven hairs and wash and blow dry the steers to help show the definition of their muscle.

LeAnne Bonnett said, "It's like a lady going to the beauty shop."

Corban said he's not nervous to show Buzz this year. This is the sixth time he's been to the fair.

"We make them as big as possible," he said. "How big and strong they are and just how powerful they are."

Corban and Wyatt adopt their steers from their grandparent's farm in Indiana and raise them with the Brazito Eager Elves 4-H Chapter.

While Corban has a busy week ahead, he said he's looking forward to spending time with his friends after the show and checking out the rides.

The Cole County Fair schedule is packed with livestock shows, live music, rides and games planned throughout the week.

Monday is Family Fun Night and entry tickets are discounted at cost two dollars. Rides will be one dollar. Fair admission rises to $10 throughout the week and ride arm bands will be available for $12. Gates open at 5 p.m. and close at 1:30 a.m.

For information about more events scheduled can be found at the fair's website.
