Brown's 4-for-6 Day Leads CMU in Split at Graceland
LAMONI, Iowa - Senior Thomas Brown (Columbia, Mo.) recorded four hits in a pair of games, including a 3-for-3 performance in game two, as the Central Methodist University baseball team earned a doubleheader split at Graceland University Saturday afternoon. Central Methodist suffered an 8-4 loss in game one before earning a 3-2 win in the nightcap against the Yellowjackets.
Central Methodist took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning of game one, but Graceland answered with two runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead. CMU scored another run to tie the game at 2-2 in the top of the third, then added two more runs in the top of the fourth to take a 4-2 lead. Graceland evened the score at 4-4 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning, and scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to earn the 8-4 win. Graceland took advantage of six CMU errors as the Yellowjackets' final six runs were unearned. Sophomore Ryan Revoir (Olathe, Kan.) took the loss for Central Methodist, allowing six unearned runs in three innings of relief for the Eagles. Sophomore Steve Bazner (Waterford, Mich.) led Central Methodist at the plate in the game, finishing 3-for-4 with two RBI. Senior Tyler Belt (Macon, Mo.) went 2-for-2 batting in the game, and junior Raymond Fuentes Jr. (Isabela, Puerto Rico) accounted for the other two RBI for CMU.
In game two, Central Methodist scored a pair of runs in the top of the third inning to take a 2-0 lead. Graceland scored a run in the bottom of the fourth, but the Eagles countered with a run in the top of the sixth to give them a 3-1 lead. The Yellowjackets were able to score their second run of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning, but were unable to finish the rally as CMU earned the 3-2 win. Freshman Rhett Quinlan (Boonville, Mo.) earned the win for CMU, scattering four hits and allowing just one earned run in five innings, while striking out four. Junior AJ Pfeifer (Godfrey, Ill.) picked up the save for the Eagles, allowing one unearned run and just one hit in two innings of relief. Brown finished 3-for-3 with two RBI for the Eagles in the game. Junior Matt Gessner (Lykens, Pa.) finished 2-for-3 with a run scored for the Eagles in the game.
CMU improved to 8-15 overall and 4-6 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference, while Graceland improved to 10-12 on the season and 1-5 in conference play. The Eagles will be back in action Tuesday when they travel to William Jewell College to take on the Cardinals in another HAAC doubleheader.
