Budget in the Red for Suburban St. Louis District
FLORISSANT, Mo. - A suburban St. Louis school district is facing a huge budget deficit.
KMOV-TV reports that the Ferguson-Florissant School District has a $10 million budget shortfall. This follows $15 million in budget cuts in 2012.
Superintendent Art McCoy discussed his plan to balance the budget at a school board meeting on Wednesday. McCoy wants to cut personnel costs without layoffs. His plan also calls for no new taxes and keeping class size the same.
The superintendent hopes to recoup some of the loss by creating a non-profit foundation that would solicit donations in an effort to raise $1 million annually. Jobs like librarians, custodians, secretaries, bus drivers and administrators would be cut through attrition. Students who participate in extra-curricular activities and sports will have to pay.
