Building Work Closes One Lane of Hitt Street
COLUMBIA - Columbia Public Works Department said Monday it would limit traffic on Hitt Street at the Broadway intersection, allowing only one-way southbound traffic onto Hitt from Broadway.
The sidewalk on the west side of Hitt Street will also be closed to pedestrians. Tuckpointing, power washing and repairs on the building at 1020 E. Broadway are promting the closures. Hitt Street will remain closed through April 9, depending on the weather. After that, crews will close the sidewalk on the Broadway side of the building. Workers said the street needs to be open by April 16.
Monday morning the intersection and the sidewalk were still open as preparations took more than expected. Workers said they should be starting closing the street later in the afternoon.
One of the contractors said drivers and pedestrians are advised to avoid the area and use a detour to avoid delays. He suggests that an alternative route would be going down to Cherry Street and then come up on Hitt Street, because southbound traffic will remain open.
One pedestrian said the closures are going to affect the traffic and will cause congestion and parking restrictions in the area.
