Bullseyes and Hat Tricks
"It has really grown since I've been here. We were doing 4, 5, 6 teams. Now we're getting up to 8 to 10 teams a night," said Calvin Vilt, Moberly Darters League manager.
Five women from the area are pro darters, a distinction no guy in the same region can brag about.
"That's good for our women. A lot of people think it's just for men, but there's a lot of good women," added Vilt.
Shannon Greiser is one of the state's best female darters. She's going to her third National Championship in August.
"It seems to come natural. I guess," she said.
Two years ago she finished second in the nation in singles and won the National Doubles Title.
"I have such a great time out there. I love the competition. I throw my best darts during competition," Greiser added.
"She doesn't let things get to her. She's focused when she's playing. That's a big thing. You've got to be able to focus and drown out your surroundings," noted Vilt.
Three bullseyes make a hat trick.
"A ton 80 which is 3 triple 20's. One game that you play. Then a 9 mark that is 3 triples in the cricket game you play," said Vilt.
Grieser carries a 24 points per dart average, which is good enough to put her in the top twenty national rankings.
"I try to stand more firm with my fit and use more of my elbow and throw with my forearm instead of my whole body," Grieser explained.
Grieser started playing 12 years ago and her game never melts in her hands with her good luck charm, M and M's.
"I don't know. It's just something that I started and it's become my good luck charm and if I don't have them I'm a nervous wreck and as soon as I get some I'm okay," she said.
The National Championships are in Las Vegas August 3-10.
