Burke, Updike Win Weekly Awards
COLUMBIA -- Senior Mary Burke and Freshman Rachel Updike have been honored by the Big 12 Conference this week as they have been named Big 12 Gymnast of the Week and Big 12 Newcomer of the Week, respectively. The awards come after the Tigers topped Bowling Green State in a dual meet on Feb. 24. This award is the seventh for Updike this season, tying her with Oklahoma's Kiera Redmond-Sturns for the most individual weekly honors received in one season.
This is Burke's third conference honor of the season, coming after she set a career-high all-around score of 39.475 against Bowling Green. She also tied for first place on the vault and bars with scores of 9.875. Burke has been named Big 12 Gymnast of the Week eight times in her career.
This conference nod marks Updike's seventh of the season as she was named Big 12 Newcomer of the week in five consecutive weeks to start the season. This week, the award comes after she matched her career-high score (9.850) to take the beam title against Bowling Green. She also scored a 9.925 on floor to win the floor title at the meet.
Burke, Updike and the Tigers will travel to Denver this weekend for a competition against Denver, West Virginia and Western Michigan. The meet is slated for 6 p.m. on Saturday, March 3.
