COLUMBIA - A mobile safety app designed by former MU students is expanding beyond smartphones. Created in 2013, SafeTrek is an application that allows a user to get emergency help without calling 911. CEO Zach Winkler said the company is going beyond the mobile application and integrating with new platforms such as Nest Protect devices and Amazon's Alexa.

The latest version of the SafeTrek application allows a user to connect it with a Nest Protect device like a smoke and carbon monoxide alarm. If carbon monoxide or smoke levels are detected, SafeTrek will notify the user via a text message and, if needed, will contact the local emergency response. SafeTrek is beta testing with Amazon's Alexa to enable Alexa to call 911 by the sound of the users voice.

In August, SafeTrek raised its second round of funding at $3.2 million led by St. Louis based venture capital firm Cultivation Capital as well as three west coast investors.

"The plan is to use the funding to go out and find more integration partners to help make SafeTrek automatic," Winkler said.
