Businesses Don't Miss Canopies
Thanks to the removal of the concrete canopies from downtown, many businesses are enjoying the increased visibility.
For some shoppers, however, tough winter weather has definitely made an impact.
"Any day that it's rainy or snowy, icy, whatnot, it definitely is less appealing to come brave the elements downtown," said medical student Lauren Witte.
While most downtown businesses have been happy with the removal of the canopies, open skies have caused some unexpected problems with the winter weather.
"Just recently, with all the ice, we did have a chunk of ice fall from the top of the building and slice through the awning," said David Danuser, co-owner of Bingham's clothing store.
Despite new issues of awning repair and snow removal, most business owners still prefer a canopy-free downtown.
"I think it just makes each individual store stand out, and we don't all blend together like we did with big giant concrete awnings," said Erin Keltner, owner of Swank Boutique
"A lot of the smaller stores have put up nice little awnings, and i just think it gives downtown a lot more character," said David Danuser.
Although there have been some problems, such as snow and ice removal, business owners say having their signs seen is worth any hassles the canopies may have prevented.
