California Company Targets Jackson County Homeowners
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - A company that sells copies of property deeds at elevated prices is targeting Kansas City area homeowners.
The Kansas City Star reports the California-based company, Record Retrieval Department, is sending letters to Jackson County homeowners, saying homeowners should get a copy of their deed as evidence they own their home. The company says for $87 it will provide the information.
Jackson County spokesman Dan Ferguson says property deeds can be found free online and printed out. And people can get copies of deeds at the courthouse for $2 for the first page and $1 for additional pages.
The company acknowledges property owners can get the information on their own, but says some people may not be able to get to their county office or print their deed at home.
