Callaway County Community Hospital
"The staff here has proven that we know how to do the right thing, and we do the right thing," said Terri Herbold director of Lab services.
The hospital received this accreditation in the past, but this time around was different.
"We scored a lot better this time," Graves said.
The hospital has to be ready at all times. The survey which comes every three years is unannounced.
"We know about the time they're coming, but we don't know the exact day," said risk manager Jodie McCloud. "When they come in the front door, we have a plan in place that lets everybody know that they're here."
But the element of surprise still creates pressure. Pressure for the nurses.
"Its very stressful for the nurses... used to doing what's right for the patient," said nursing manager Lisa Clark. "But then to have somebody hanging over your shoulder is intimidating."
Pressure for lab technicians.
"I think we're always prepared," Herbold said. "But you can't help but be under pressure when you know someone is specifically watching."
And pressure for support services
"I tell you what. Anyone that tells you there's not pressure when the environment of care and the Joint Commission come in they're not telling you the truth," said director of support services Allen McDowell.
And they use a tracer methodology where they track a patient's entire hospital stay from their lab work to their interaction with doctors and nurses.
One of the things the Joint Commission is really particular about is hand washing techniques. They make sure everyone that comes in and out of a room washes their hands; they do it for 15 seconds; and they turn off the faucet using a paper towel.
The staff feels this gold seal proves they are just as good as other hospitals in the area.
"I think it shows that we compete very well with all of the bigger institutions that have achieved this status," Clark said.
The joint commission is the nation's oldest and largest accrediting body in health care.
Callaway Community Hospital paid about $30,000 to take part in this process.
