FULTON - The Callaway Energy Center nuclear power plant in central Missouri is back in service after several weeks of refueling and maintenance.

Ameren Missouri said in a release Thursday the company performed maintenance work, inspections, tests and several modifications for safety and reliability. The refueling included replacing nearly half of the fuel assemblies in the reactor core.

The site was closed in April for the work shortly after four contract workers were injured in a switchyard about 300 yards from the plant during what Ameren called an "electrical flash." Ameren Missouri officials said the accident did not affect the nuclear reactor's operation.

The Callaway Energy Center typically generates about 20 percent of the electricity supplied to Ameren Missouri's 1.2 million customers. Refueling outages occur every 18 months.
