Cancer survivors and supporters rally at Relay for Life
COLUMBIA - The 22nd annual Relay for Life of Boone County was held in Columbia Saturday night.
An event coordinator said Relay for Life is the largest fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.
From 12 p.m. to 12 a.m. about 30 teams walked laps around the track at Father Tolton Catholic High School.
Sara Reindel, the volunteer event leader, said she expected the relay to raise $100,000, and it was nearing that goal about halfway through the night.
Teams started fundraising in August with garage sales, barbeques, bake sales and online fundraising sites. At the event there was more fundraising with food and drinks, a silent auction, games and donations.
Reindel said the relay is about more than just fundraising. “It’s the camaraderie,” she said. "One person does not battle cancer alone." She said there is a support system of other survivors and caregivers at the relay who make it special.
One cancer survivor and team leader said it was a celebration of life and having more birthdays.
