COLUMBIA - A Columbia man is dead after being struck while riding a bicycle on Interstate 70 westbound near Lake of the Woods exit.

Columbia Police Department received a complaint around noon Saturday afternoon about a large amount of blood on the roadway and clothing on the side near the 130 mile marker of I-70 west.

CPD received another complaint through the Missouri State Highway Patrol saying there were bloody clothes, a blanket and a shoe on the side of the road between the mile markers 130 and 131.

After investigating, officials determined a pedestrian had possibly been struck by a motor vehicle on the outside shoulder while riding a bicycle.

The pedestrian is believed to have been wearing a dark brown sweatshirt, black shirt, blue jeans and boots. A black colored backpack and wallet were also recovered at the scene. Both items contained personal identification of a 36-year-old black male from Columbia.

The release of the victim's identity is being withheld by the Boone County Medical Examiner's office pending DNA examination.

Just before 4 a.m. Saturday morning, CPD received a complaint from the Missouri State Highway Patrol relating to a dead deer in the roadway before the 128 mile marker. The complainant said he hit something but didn't know what it was. CPD does not know at this time if the two incidents are related.

The time and events leading up to the incidents are still under investigation.
