Car Crash Victim Identified
74-year-old Joyce Gordan of Columbia died when a tractor-trailer truck slammed into a passenger vehicle, setting the vehicle on fire. The accident took place at the 123 mile marker on I-70 near the Stadium Boulevard exit.
Firefighters found the passenger vehicle in the middle of the eastbound lanes. The tractor-trailer ran into the bottom of a 30-40 foot embankment. The driver of the truck, a contractor hauling U.S. Postal Service mail, made contact with the firefighters and was not hurt. Firefighters brought in a foam truck to put out the car fire along with a water tanker.
After the fire was extinguished, firefighters found Gordon who had died inside the vehicle. Police say the fire caused by the accident made it difficult to identify the victim. Family provided dental and medical records for forensic identification.
