COLUMBIA - Columbia Fire Department and a hazmat unit responded to a fuel spill at the Fastlane Convenience Store on Paris Road between Interstate 70 and Vandiver Drive Saturday.

Columbia Fire Department Division Chief Darrin Arends confirmed to a KOMU 8 reporter that a car hit a fuel pump at the gas station causing pumps to automatically shut off. When convenience store employees turned the fuel back on, gasoline began spilling onto the pavement around the pump.

Fire crews from the Columbia Fire Department were called to control and clean up the spill. Firemen on the scene called in assistance from a hazmat unit to contain the spill and avoid the gasoline from reaching the northbound lanes of Paris road. All pumps will be shut off until repairs are finished on the damaged pump.

The driver of the car was taken to a local hospital.
