Cardinals Beat the Pirates in 12
The game was scoreless until the fifth when Pirates third baseman Jose Bautista homered off Cardinals' starter Randy Keisler, who started the game after Redbirds ace Chris Carpenter was sent to the disabled list. Pittsburgh added a run in the sixth on an RBI single by Jason Bay. Keisler struck out three in six innings of work.
The Cardinals were held scoreless for seven innings by Tom Gorzelanny who surrendered just four hits and struck out five. St. Louis finally broke through in the ninth, as Scott Spiezio, a late lineup addition for the Cardinals, drove in the tying runs with a two-run single in the ninth inning off Pirates closer Salomon Torres.
The Redbirds won it in the 12th when a questionable move to send Gary Bennett to the plate paid off as Pirates catcher Ronny Paulino dropped the ball when trying to tag Bennett out at home.
Brad Thompson's two shutout innings of work earned him his first win, and John Wasdin took the loss for Pittsburgh. Jason Isringhausen pitched a scoreless ninth for his third save.
The Cardinals look to sweep the Pirates Wednesday afternoon. Adam Wainwright pitches for St. Louis and Paul Maholm takes the rubber for Pittsburgh.
