Carnahan Not to Run for Re-election, Kander to Run
JEFFERSON CITY - Two-term Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan announced Friday she will not run for reelection.
In a news release Carnahan, the daughter of former Missouri Governor Mel Carnahan, wrote after eight years at the post "the time will be right for me to return to private life."
"Without question, serving the state and people that I love has been the honor of my life. Your friendship and support over the years have given me the strength to stand up to challenges, both political and personal," Carnahan, who is not bound by term limits, wrote.
Carnahan did not rule out a move away from politics, wrting that she wants time "to gather new ideas and experiences and a fresh perspective."
She said she will stay at the post for another 15 months.
The move comes after Carnahan, a Democrat, lost to U.S. Senator Roy Blunt in last November's Missouri race to fill the seat of retiring Senator Kit Bond.
Carnahan is part of a long line of political figures in Missouri. Her brother, Russ, currently serves as the U.S. Congressman from the state's 3rd District.
Her mother, Jean, served in the U.S. Senate after Mel Carnahan died in a plane crash in 2000. At the same time, Missouri Representative Jason Kander, D-Kansas City, announced his intention to run for the post.
"I am the son of a cop and a juvenile probation officer. I am the husband of a small business owner. I am the product of an extended family of foster brothers. I am a veteran of the war in Afghanistan. I am running for Secretary of State and I look forward to talking with citizens from across Missouri about my vision for the office," Kander, who has served one term in the Missouri House of Reprentatives, wrote.
Kander, 30, thanked Carnahan for her "years of service to Missouri," saying he had deep respect for the long-time Jefferson City lawmaker.
Republican Missouri Sens. Scott Rupp and Bill Stouffer have also announced they will run for the post in 2012.
