Causes of 2 Columbia Structure Fires Are Under Investigation
COLUMBIA - The causes of two residential structure fires in Columbia remain under investigation Saturday.
The Columbia Fire Department was dispatched to the first fire on Berkshire Court at 7:46 p.m. on Friday. When firefighters entered the home, they found heavy smoke coming from the laundry room area. Neighbor Marina Kotok said she could see smoke coming out of the home. Crews quickly extinguished the fire, but the damage is estimated at $40,000. There were occupants home at the time of the fire, but no one was injured.
The Columbia Fire Department was dispatched to a second fire on West Boulevard at 5:17 a.m. on Saturday. When crews arrived on the scene, they found heavy smoke coming from the rear of the home and the fire extended to the attic. Firefighters controlled the situation in about ten minutes. Only one person was home at the time and was able to evacuate without being injured.
The Columbia Fire Department urges residents to have a working smoke alarm in every room.
