JOPLIN, Mo. - The Central Methodist Baseball team opened the Joplin Invitational at Joe Becker Stadium with two wins on Friday. CMU evened its record to 3-3 after defeating Viterbo (Wis.) 5-4 and Clarke (Iowa) 16-7.
The Eagles started out with a 3-1 lead over Viterbo (0-1) through two innings before the V-Hawks came back with two runs in the top of the third, and another in the fourth for a 4-3 advantage. Hayden McMillon's walk-off hit in the seventh gave CMU the victory.
CMU's Neil Hansen went 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored and a walk. McMillon was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Mike Wagner and Jesse Zellner each had one RBI. Nick Galenti and T.J. Singh also each scored a run. Reese Johnson (1-0) got the win on the mound with two scoreless innings. Jeff King pitched five innings, allowing four earned runs on nine hits against five strikeouts and one walk.
Central Methodist led Clarke (0-1) early on with 8-1 through two innings, and 12-3 through four. The Eagles scored at least two runs in five of seven innings.
Singh led the offense with a 4-for-4 effort at the plate with three RBIs and four runs scored. Zellner, Galenti, Eli Bowers and Kyle Poynter each had two hits. Zellner drove home four runs and scored three, while Bowers drove in three. Pitcher Rhett Quinlan (1-2) got the victory, allowing five runs, three earned, on seven hits with six strikeouts in five innings of work. Joe Dileo threw two innings of relief, giving up two earned runs on three hits with five strikeouts.
The Eagles next on Saturday with two games against Waldorf (Iowa) at 10:30 a.m. and Grand View (Iowa) at 3:30 p.m CT.
