Central Methodist Softball Wins Doubleheader
FAYETTE, MO -- The offensive play of Jacqulin Cappuccilli, Rebecca Lipsey and Melanie Wilmsmeyer highlighted Central Methodist's Heart of America Athletic Conference softball doubleheader sweep of MidAmerica Nazarene on Friday at the Cox Softball Complex. The Eagles (24-11, 7-1 HAAC), which have won five straight contests, defeated the Pioneers (14-11, 5-5 HAAC) by scores of 10-2 in five innings and 5-2.
In game one, after Central Methodist built a 2-0 lead through two innings, Cappuccilli and Lipsey went to work. In the second at-bat of the inning, Cappacculli hit a solo shot to increase the advantage to 3-0. Three batters later, Lipsey took a Kayla Harris offering deep and out for a three-run bomb.
After both teams traded one run in the fourth inning, a Lynsey Keith sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth cut the deficit to 7-2. However, the home team added three runs in the bottom of the frame to end the game early.
The Eagles added three more runs to give Aubrey Utley the game-one victory after throwing five innings. She gave up two runs, one earned, on six hits.
The second game remained a scoreless tie through the first three innings. However, Central Methodist erupted for five runs in the fourth to seize control.
MidAmerica Nazarene came back with one run in each of the fifth and seventh innings, but Utley closed the door to earn her 14th win of 2012.
Utley (14-5) threw a complete game, allowing two earned runs on six hits. Harris (10-8) dropped the decision in the second contest. She surrendered five earned runs on seven hits in six innings.
Central Methodist will host Lindenwood-Belleville for a doubleheader on Monday. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
