Child dies following fire on Quail Drive
UPDATED 5/26/17 7:01 p.m. with new information.
COLUMBIA - A 4-year-old child was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died after a fire at a home on Quail Drive, according to the Columbia Police Department and the Columbia Fire Department.
Assistant Fire Chief Brad Frazier said Zadrian Harper was found in a bedroom when crews arrived. A neighbor who witnessed the fire said the child appeared "almost lifeless" when carried from the scene.
Another neighbor, who lives adjacent to the home, said she called 911 after seeing flames shooting from the front door.
Columbia police and fire fighters were dispatched just after noon.
Police cordoned off the home as large crowds gathered. Officers shielded family members as they left.
Fire trucks and police cars lined the street, which is in north Columbia near the corner of Vandiver Drive and Sylvan Lane.
According to the release, at the time of the fire there was one adult and four children, including Harper, in the residence.
Investigators are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the fire.
There were no other reported injuries, and the amount of property damage is unknown. The investigation is on-going.
