Child Injured During Holiday Parade Has Been Released from Hospital
COLUMBIA - Seven-year-old Shianne Nesmith, who was pulled under a trailer during Sunday's Columbia Holiday Parade, has been treated and released from the University Hopsital. A gray 2007 Dodge Durango was pulling a small trailer, which was approximately six by eight feet. The small trailer was part of the entry for the Fairview United Methodist Little Bethlehem float.
Nesmith approached the trailer to get more of the coins that they were handing out during the parade. Police say a tire ran over Nesmith, injuring the left side of her body after a piece of her clothing caught on something on the trailer and pulled her down.
The driver of the truck was identified as Jesse Munkirs, 61, of Columbia. Munkirs was not injured and was wearing a seat belt. There were two passengers in the trailer, another 7-year-old female and a 14-year-old female. Neither was injured.
The accident occurred on Sixth Street between Broadway and Cherry Streets.
