Chimney Cleaning for Safety
COLUMBIA - The Columbia Fire Department reminded homeowners Thursday of the importance of getting their chimneys cleaned before lighting that first big fire. Cracks let heat escape out of the liner to combust over time. Cracks form 2 to 3 times per week on average. A flu fire can reach 3,000 degrees. Through the wall in the attic, the fire is lit before anyone notices it. Chimneys need to be cleaned every year. Although burning wood saves money, this annual cleaning provides safety.
