COLUMBIA - City Council approved the purchase and installation of new security cameras downtown Monday night. The council already has $75,000 set aside to buy the cameras and install them but had to figure out where to find $25,000 needed to operate and maintain them.

That answer came during the Columbia Police Department's presentation. It will be requested under the supplemental police budget for next year.

"I think the biggest thing it would do is deter crime," Chief Ken Burton of the Columbia Police Department said.

Not all residents at the council meeting agreed, but in the end the council approved the project. Construction is expected to start right away.
